JEE Main & Advanced Sample Paper JEE Main Sample Paper-36

  • question_answer
A \[1.0\text{ }M\] solution with respect to each of the metal halides \[A{{X}_{3}},B{{X}_{2}},C{{X}_{3}}\] and \[D{{X}_{2}}\] is electro lysed using platinum electrodes. If \[{{E}^{o}}_{{{A}^{3+}}/A}=1.50V,\,{{E}^{o}}_{{{B}^{2+}}/B}=0.3V,\,{{E}^{o}}_{{{C}^{3+}}/C}=-0.74V,{{E}^{o}}_{{{D}^{2+}}/D}=-23.7V.\] The correct sequence in which the various metals are deposited at the cathode is

    A)  A, B, C, D

    B)  A, B, C

    C)  D, C, B, A

    D)  C, B, A

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The more the reduction potential, the more is the deposition of metals at cathode. Cation having \[{{E}^{o}}\]value less than \[-0.83V\] (reduction potential of \[{{H}_{2}}O\]) will not deposit from aqueous solution.
