  • question_answer
\[{{M}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}({{M}^{+}}\]is a monovalent metal ion) has a K. of \[3.2\times {{10}^{-5}}\] at 298 K. The maximum concentration of \[SO_{4}^{-2}\]ion that could be attained in a saturated solution of this solid at 298   K is

    A) \[3\times {{10}^{-3}}M\]

    B) \[7\times {{10}^{-2}}M\]

    C) \[2.89\times {{10}^{-4}}M\]

    D) \[2\times {{10}^{-2}}M\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    The maximum concentration of \[S{{O}_{4}}^{-2}\] will be same as the solubility of\[{{M}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}};\] If solubility is \[{{L}^{-1}}mol\,{{L}^{-1}}{{M}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}2{{M}^{+}}+S{{O}_{4}}^{-2}\] \[{{K}_{sp}}=4{{x}^{3}},\]therefore \[x={{({{K}_{sp}}/4)}^{1/3}}\] \[[S{{O}_{4}}^{-2}]=x={{({{K}_{sp}}/4)}^{1/3}}=[3.2\times {{10}^{-5}}]/4{{]}^{1/3}}\] \[=2\times {{10}^{-2}}M\]
