During the electrolysis of concentrated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, the pH of solution (electrolyte)

    A)  increases

    B)  decreases

    C)  remains same

    D)  Non-e of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

     During electrolysis of concentrated aqueous solution of \[V=\frac{1}{4\pi {{\varepsilon }_{0}}}\left[ \frac{Q}{R} \right]+\frac{1}{4\pi {{\varepsilon }_{0}}}\left[ \frac{q}{r} \right]\], chlorine gas is released at anode and \[=\frac{1}{{{\varepsilon }_{0}}}\left[ \frac{Q}{4\pi {{R}^{2}}}\times R+\frac{q}{4\pi {{r}^{2}}}\times r \right]\] gas is liberated at cathode leaving \[\frac{Q}{4\pi {{R}^{2}}}=\frac{q}{4\pi {{r}^{2}}}=\sigma \] and \[\therefore \] ions in the solution, i.e., \[V=\frac{1}{{{\varepsilon }_{0}}}\,[\sigma R+\sigma r]=\frac{\sigma }{{{\varepsilon }_{0}}}[R+r]\] concentration increases. Therefore, pH increases.
