In the cyanide extraction process of silver from argentite ore, the oxidizing and reducing agents used are

    A) \[{{O}_{2}}\] and CO respectively

    B) \[{{O}_{2}}\] and Zn dust respectively

    C) \[HN{{O}_{3}}\] and Zn dust respectively

    D) \[HN{{O}_{3}}\] and CO respectively

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The reactions involved in extraction of silver by cyanide process are \[A{{g}_{2}}S+C{{N}^{-}}+{{O}_{2}}\to {{[Ag{{(CN)}_{2}}]}^{-}}+S{{O}_{2}}\]...... (i) \[{{[Ag{{(CN)}_{2}}]}^{-}}+Zn\to {{[Zn{{(CN)}_{4}}]}^{2-}}+Ag\]...... (ii) In reaction (i), sulphide is oxidized to \[S{{O}_{2}}\] by oxygen. In the reaction (ii), silver ion \[(A{{g}^{+}})\] is reduced to Ag by Zn. Therefore, \[{{O}_{2}}\]is oxidising agent and Zn is reducing agent.
