Plants P and Q were studied for the effect of flashes of light on the flowering. For both P and Q, during 14 h dark period, flashes of light were given at different time intervals. The results are shown in the graph. Choose the correct statement from the following options.

    A) P: Short day plant, sufficient \[{{\operatorname{P}}_{fr}}\] (in the Middle of the dark period)\[\to \] florigen

    B) Q: Short day plant, sufficient \[{{\operatorname{P}}_{r}}\] (in the Middle of the dark period)\[\to \] florigen

    C) P: Long day plant, sufficient \[{{\operatorname{P}}_{r}}\] (in the Middle of the dark period) \[\to \]florigen

    D) Q: Long day plant, sufficient \[{{\operatorname{P}}_{fr}}\] (in the middle of the dark period) \[\to \]florigen

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Plant P is short day plant as exposure to flashes of light lowered down flowering in it. Plant Q is a long day plant as flashes of light promoted flowering. On exposure to light during 14h long dark period, \[{{P}_{r}}\] is converted into \[{{P}_{fr}}\] In short day plants, \[{{P}_{r}}\] form builds up during night and activates florigen whereas in long day plants \[{{P}_{fr}}\]. form builds up during light hours and activates florigen. So, \[{{P}_{fr}}\]. Promotes flowering in long day plants and inhibits flowering in short day plants.
