A 0.02 M solution of pyridinium hydrochloride has\[pH=3.44\]. The ionisation constant of pyridine is

    A) \[1.84\times {{10}^{-7}}\]

    B) \[2.36\times {{10}^{-\,9}}\]

    C) \[1.5\times {{10}^{-\,9}}\]

    D) \[3.62\times {{10}^{-\,7}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Pyridinium hydrochloride is a salt of pyridine (weak base) and nydrochloric acid (strong acid). pH of a solution of strong acids and weak base can be calculated as
    \[pH=7-\frac{1}{2}(p{{K}_{b}}+\log c)\]
    \[\therefore \]\[3.44=7-\frac{p{{K}_{b}}}{2}-\frac{\log 0.02}{2}\]
    \[p{{K}_{b}}=8.82\]
    \[p{{K}_{b}}=8.82=-\log {{K}_{b}}\]
    \[{{K}_{b}}=1.5\times {{10}^{-\,9}}\]
