Iron oxide crystallises in a hexagonal close-packed array of oxide ions with two out of every three octahedral holes occupied by iron ions. Derive the formula of the iron oxide.

    A) \[FeO\]

    B) \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\]

    C) \[F{{e}_{3}}{{O}_{4}}\]

    D) All are possible

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

[b] There is one octahedral hole for each atom in hexagonal close packed arrangement. If the number of oxide ions \[({{O}^{2-}})\] per unit cell is 1, then the number of \[{{F}^{e3+}}\] ions \[=2/3\times \]octahedral holes \[=2/3\times 1=2/3.\] Thus, the formula of the compound \[F{{e}_{2/3}}{{O}_{1}}\] or \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}.\]
