    Let the two numbers be x and y. \[\therefore \] According to question, \[x+y=40\]                    ...(i) \[x-y=4\]                       ...(ii) From Eqs. (i) and (ii) we get \[x=22\] and \[y=18\] \[\therefore \] Required ratio \[=\frac{22}{18}=\frac{11}{9}\]
