  • question_answer
    An article is listed at Rs. 900 and two successive discounts of 8% and 8% are given on it. How much would the seller gain or loss, if he gives a single discount of 16%, instead of two discounts?

    A) Gain of Rs. 4.76

    B)  Loss of Rs. 5.76

    C)  Gain of Rs. 5.76

    D)  Loss of Rs. 4.76

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    Equivalent discount for two successive discounts of 8% and 8%
    \[=\left( 8+8-\frac{8\times 8}{100} \right)%\]
    \[=(16-0\cdot 64)%=15.36%\]
    \[\therefore \]      SP \[=(100-15\cdot 36)%\]of Rs. 900
    = Rs. \[\left( \frac{84.64\times 900}{100} \right)\]= Rs. 761.76
    For a single discount of 16%,
    SP = 84% of 900 = Rs. \[\left( \frac{84\times 900}{100} \right)\] = Rs. 756
    Certainly seller will lose in this case
    \[\therefore \] Loss = Rs. \[(761.76-756)\] = Rs. 5.76
