    The ratio of present ages of two brothers is 1 : 2 and 5 yr back the ratio was 1 : 3. What will be the ratio of their ages after 5 yr?

    Solution :

    Let the present ages of two brothers be x yr and 2x yr. Now,     \[\frac{x-5}{2x-5}=\frac{1}{3}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[3x-15=2x-5\Rightarrow 3x-2x=15-5\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=10\] \[\therefore \]Their present ages = 10 yr and 20 yr After 5 yr their required ratio \[=\frac{15}{20}=\frac{3}{5}=3:5\]
