  • question_answer
The sum of the squares of two positive integers 100 and the difference of their squares is 28. The sum of the numbers is

    A)  12

    B)  13

    C)  14

    D)  15

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Let the numbers be x and y. Then,    \[{{x}^{2}}+{{y}^{2}}=100\] \[{{x}^{2}}-{{y}^{2}}=28\] On adding,         \[2{{x}^{2}}=128\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[{{x}^{2}}=64\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[x=8\] From Eq. (i), \[64+{{y}^{2}}=100\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[{{y}^{2}}=36\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[y=6\] \[\therefore \] Required sum \[=8+6=14\]
