    In many of our schools, children who 'complete' primary school are not fully functional in the language that serves as the medium of their education. One would expect that a class VI student, almost twelve years old with five years, of schooling behind him, would be able to read, understand and write the language. Unfortunately, surveys conducted among rural school children in the state reveal that this is not the case. A majority of the school population was found to be at the frustration -level in understanding the texts.
