Which of the following is the most serious pollutant among sulphur compounds?

    A) Oxides of sulphur

    B) carbonyl sulphide

    C) Carbon disulphide

    D) Sulphates

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

A group of highly reactive gasses known as "oxides of sulphur" with Sulphur Dioxide and Sulphur Trioxide being the major two. The largest sources of \[S{{O}_{2}}\] emissions are from fossil fuel combustion at power plants (73%) and other industrial facilities (20%). Smaller sources of \[S{{O}_{2}}\]emissions include industrial processes such as extracting metal from ore, and the burning of high sulphur containing fuels by locomotives, large ships, and non-road equipment. Sulphur trioxide (alternative spelling, sulphur trioxide) is the chemical compound with the formula\[S{{O}_{3}}\]. In the gaseous form, this species is a significant pollutant, being the primary agent in acid rain. It is prepared on massive scales as a precursor to sulfaric acid. Sulphur trioxide will cause serious bums on both inhalation and ingestion because it is highly corrosive and hygroscopic in nature.
