Pluto was demoted from the status of a planet to that of dwarf planet in 2006 because it
    (I) does not have sufficient mass.
(II) Has not cleared the neighbour around its orbit.
    Codes:

    A)  Statement I is correct.

    B) Statement II is correct.

    C) Both statements I and II are correct.

    D)  Neither statement I nor II is correct.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The new definition of a planet adopted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) during its week long discussion at Prague in the Czech Republic on August 24, 2006 was as follows: Planet: A planet is a celestial body that:  Is in orbit around the Sun. Has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape. Has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.  Should be as effective around the sun as other planets are. According to the above definition, Pluto has lost its status as a planet and is demoted to the status of a dwarf planet.
