What is true of adiabatic rate and lapse rate?
    1. Adiabatic rate applies to rising or descending air
    2. Lapse rate applies to stable atmosphere
    3. Adiabatic rate is different for dry and saturated air
    4. Adiabatic rate is due to expansion or contraction of air

    A)  1 and 2

    B) 1 and 3

    C) 1, 2 and 3

    D)  All four

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The term adiabatic implies change in temperature without actual loss or gain of heat. The adiabatic changes in the atmosphere occur due to expansion of air (ascending air) or compression thereof (descending air). The adiabatic rate varies depending upon whether the air is saturated or dry. The dry adiabatic rate is higher than the normal lapse rate and the saturated adiabatic rate is lower than the normal lapse rate.
