When a bicycle is in motion by pedaling, the force of friction exerted by the ground on the two wheels is such that it acts

    A)  In the backward direction on the front wheel and in the forward direction on the rear wheel

    B)  In the forward direction on the front wheel and in the backward direction on the rear wheel

    C)  In the backward direction on both front and the rear wheels

    D)  In the forward direction on both front and the rear wheels

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] Pedaling is done on rear wheel. This means that we try to rotate the rear wheel to move forward. The rear wheel pushes the ground backwards and gets the forward frictional force which pushes the bicycle forward. The front wheel is being pushed forward (through the connecting rod between the rear and front wheels) which results in the backward frictional force on its tire which rotate it in the same direction as the rear wheel.
