    [d] Andhra State Āndhra was a state in India created on October 1, 1953, from the Telugu-speaking northern districts of Madras State. Meghalaya was formed by carving out two districts from the state of Assam: the United Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills, and the Garo Hills on 21 January 1972. Before attaining full statehood; Meghalaya was given semi-autonomous status in 1970. Jharkhand is a state in eastern India carved out of the southern part of Bihar on 15 November 2000. When India became independent in 1947, Goa remained under Portuguese control. On 18 December 1961, Indian troops crossed the border into Goa. Operation Vijay involved sustained land, sea and air strikes for more than thirty-six hours; it resulted in the unconditional surrender of Portuguese forces on 19 December. Goa was later admitted Indian statehood in 1987.
