    Consider the following:
    (i) Meteors are smaller pieces of matter travelling at high speed in space, whereas meteorite can be stony, iron or stony-iron
(ii) Millions of meteors strike into earth's atmosphere every day.
(iii) If the meteoroid survives atmosphere friction and falls on the ground, it is called meteorite. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

    A)  i and ii only

    B)  i and only

    C)  iii only

    D)  i, ii and iii

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] Meteor: It is smaller pieces of matters travelling at high speed in space. Most meteoroids that cause meteors are about the size of a pebble. They become visible between about 40 and 75 miles (65 and 120 km.) above the earth. They disintegrate at altitudes of 30 to 60 miles (50 to 95 km.). Meteoroids travel around the sun in a variety of orbits and at various velocities. Meteorite: If the meteoroid survives atmosphere friction and falls on the ground, it is called meteorite. There are three kind of meteorites, stony, iron, and stony-iron. Stony meteorites consist of minerals rich in silicon and oxygen, with smaller amount of iron, magnesium, and other elements. One group of stony meteorites called achondrites are pieces of the same meteorites, the achondrites, were once part of a parent body, such as an asteroid, that was large enough to have melted and separated into an iron-rich core and a stony crust. Achondrites come from the outer crust; stony-iron meteorites, from the inner crust; and iron meteorites, from the metallic core. Iron meteorites consist mostly of iron and nickel. Stony-iron meteorites have nearly equal amounts of silicon-based stone and iron-nickel metal.
