A stationary wave is represented by\[\operatorname{y} =A sin\left( 100 t \right)\,cos \left( 0.01\,x \right)\], where y and A are in millimetres, t is in seconds and x is in metre. The velocity of the wave is

    A)  \[{{10}^{2}}\,m/s\]

    B)  \[{{10}^{4}}\,m/s\]

    C)  1 m/s

    D)  Not desirable

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    As, \[\operatorname{y}=A\,sin\,(100\,t)\,cos\,\left( 0.01\,x \right)\] Comparing it with standard equation \[y=A\,\sin \,\left( \frac{2\pi }{T}t \right)\,\cos \,\left( \frac{2\pi }{\lambda }x \right)\] We have,     \[\operatorname{T}\,\,=\,\,\frac{\pi }{50},\,\,\lambda =200\,\pi \] Now, velocity of wave \[=\,\,\frac{\lambda }{T}\] \[=\,\,\frac{200\,\pi }{\pi /50}\] \[=\,\, 200 \times  50\] \[=\,\,{{10}^{4}}\,m/s\]
