The following diagrams shows arrangement for meter bridge experiment. The balance length XY corresponding to null deflection of the galvanometer is x. What would be the balance length, if radius of wire of XZ is doubled?

    A)  x

    B)  \[2{{x}^{2}}\]

    C)  \[\frac{{{x}^{2}}}{2}\]

    D)  4x

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

If \[{{R}_{XY}}\,\,and\,\,{{R}_{YZ}}\] are the resistance of wire of length XY and YZ, then condition for no deflection is \[\frac{{{R}_{A}}}{{{R}_{B}}}=\frac{{{R}_{XY}}}{{{R}_{YZ}}}\] of radius of wire XZ is doubled, the ratio \[\frac{{{R}_{XY}}}{{{R}_{YZ}}}\] will remain same. So, balance length will remain same.
