The reagent (s) which can be used to distinguish acetophenone from benzophenone is (are):

    A) \[2,\]4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine

    B) Aqueous solution of \[NaHS{{O}_{3}}\]

    C) Benedict reagent

    D) \[{{I}_{2}}\]and \[NaOH.\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] \[{{I}_{2}}\] and NaOH react with acetophenone \[({{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}COC{{H}_{3}})\] to give yellow ppt. of \[CH{{I}_{3}}\] but benzophenone \[({{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}CO{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}})\] does not and hence can be used to distinguish between them. Oxidation of methyl ketones with sodium Hypoiodite (NaOI) or \[({{I}_{2}}+NaOH)\] gives iodoform \[(CH{{I}_{3}})\] but not in case of benzophenone.
