A pipe can fill a tank in 24 h. Due to a leakage in the bottom. It is filled in 36 h. If the tank is half full, how much time will the leak take to empty the tank?                                                                                                         [SSC (CGL) 2015]

    A) 24 h

    B) 48 h

    C) 72 h

    D) 36 h

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Let the leak will empty the full tank in x h,
    \[\therefore \] From question,
    \[\frac{1}{24}-\frac{1}{x}=\frac{1}{36}\]\[\Rightarrow \,\]\[\frac{1}{x}=\frac{1}{24}-\frac{1}{36}\frac{1}{2}\]
                \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{1}{x}=\frac{3-2}{72}=\frac{1}{72}\]
So, the pipe will take 72 h to empty the full tank, Therefore, to empty half the tank it will take 36 h.
