A tap can fill an empty tank in 12 h and another tap can empty half the tank in 10 h. If both the taps are opened simultaneously, how long would it take to fill the empty tank to half of its capacity?

    A) 30 h

    B) 20 h

    C) 15 h

    D) 12 h

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Work of 1 h of first tap \[=\frac{1}{12}\]
    Work of 1 h of second tap \[=\frac{1}{10\times 2}=\frac{1}{20}\]
    \[\therefore \] Work of 1 h of both taps
    \[=\frac{1}{12}-\frac{1}{20}=\frac{5-3}{60}=\frac{1}{30}\]
Hence, the tank will take 30 h to empty the tank. Thus, to fill the half tank it will take 15 h.
