There are three pipes in a tank, first pipe can fill \[\frac{1}{2}\] part of the tank in 1 h, second pipe can fill \[\frac{1}{3}\] part of tank in 1 h and third pipe is used to make the tank empty. All three pipes are opened together, then only \[\frac{7}{12}\]part of tank is filled in one hour. In what time can the third pipe emptied the whole tank?                                                           [SSC (CGL) 2006]

    A) 3 h

    B) 4 h

    C) 5 h

    D) 6 h

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    1 h work of first pipe \[=\frac{1}{2}\]
    1 h work of second pipe \[=\frac{1}{3}\]
    \[\therefore \] 1 h work of third pipe
    \[=\frac{7}{12}-\frac{1}{3}-\frac{1}{2}=-\frac{3}{12}=-\frac{1}{4}\]
Hence, third pipe emptied the tank in 4 h.
