A certain number of men complete a piece of work in 40 days. If there were 8 men more the work could be finished in 10 days less. How many men were there afterwards?

    A) 27

    B) 24

    C) 18

    D) 32

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Let the number of men be x. So, x men can do a work in 40 days. \[(x+8)\] men can do the same work in \[(40-10)=30\,\,\text{days}\]
    According to the question,
    \[\therefore \]      \[x\times 40=30\,\,(x+8)\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[40x=30x+240\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[x=24\]
The number of men afterwards \[=24+8=32\,\,\text{men}\]
