If 2 men and 3 boys can do a piece of work in 16 days and 3 men and 2 boys can do it in 14 days, how long will 5 men and 4 boys take to do it?

    A) 6 days

    B) 8 days

    C) 9 days

    D) 10 days

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    2 men + 3 boys can do a work in 16 days.
\[\Rightarrow \]32 men and 48 boys can do the work in 1 day
Again, 3 men + 2 boys can do the work in 14 days.
\[\Rightarrow \]42 men + 28 boys can do the work in 1 day.
    \[\therefore \]42 men + 28 boys = 32 men + 48 boys
    10 men = 20 boys
    \[\Rightarrow \]               1 man = 2 boys
    Now, 2 men + 3 boys = 2 (2) boys + 3 boys =7 boys
    \[\therefore \]5 men + 4 boys = 5(2) boys + 4 boys = 14 boys
7 boys can do the work in = 16 days
\[\therefore \]14 boys can do the work in \[=\frac{7\times 16}{14}=8\,\,\text{days}\]
