The Story of My
Life
Helen, when she was young, did
not understand the consequences of her acts and indulged in childish pranks.
With the passage of time, Helen came to know many things and one of them was
how to use a key. One day she locked her mother in the pantry for three hours.
Her mother kept pounding on the door and Helen laughed with glee, as she felt
the vibration of the bounding. Because of this incident her parents thought
that she should be taught as soon as possible. Hence, Miss Sullivan was called.
Once Helen's mother gave her
something to give to Miss Sullivan. But she gave the thing to the latter,
locked Miss Sullivan in her room and hid the key under the wardrobe in the
hall. She was implored to tell where the key was but she did not speak of it.
Her father brought a ladder and took Miss Sullivan out through the window and
Helen enjoyed the drama a lot. Months later she produced the key.
These were innocent pranks and
Helen was learning the lessons of life through them.

Mr Anagnos was the Director of
the Perkins Institution for the blind. He sent Anne Sullivan to the Keller home
asa teacher for Helen. He and Helen became friends and he had her sit on his
knee when she first visited the Institution. But the incident of 'The Frost
King' soured their relationship. Helen wrote a story titled 'The FrostKing'.
Writing that story and sending it to her friend made her very excited.
Mr Anagnos delightedly published it. It
was discovered that a story similar to The Frost King' called 'The Frost fairies'
by Miss Canby had appeared in a book called- 'Birdie and his Friends'. The
stories were much alike in thought and language. And so Helen's story was
considered a case of plagiarism. At first, Mr Anagnos accepted Helen's word
that if she had copied the idea for the story, it was done unknowingly. But
later he changed his mind and came to believe that the story was intentionally plagiarized
and their friendship was forever ruined.
