In an examination, 'A' scored 25% of the total marks but failed by 56 marks and 'B' scored 50% of the total marks  which was 144 marks more than the minimum passing marks. What was the minimum passing marks for the examination?

    A)  256

    B)  196

    C)  284

    D)  180

    E)  None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

     Let the total marks of examination be x. According to the question, \[\frac{50x}{100}-\frac{25x}{100}=56+144\] \[\Rightarrow \frac{25x}{100}=200\Rightarrow \frac{x}{4}=200\] \[\Rightarrow x=4\times 200=800\] \[\therefore \] Minimum passing marks \[=\frac{25x}{100}+56\] \[=\frac{800}{4}+56=200+56=256\]
