    If the length and breadth of a rectangle are changed by x % And y % respectively, the effective change in area \[=\left( x+y+\frac{xy}{100} \right)%\] Here,     \[x=-\,40\]             \[y=-\,40\] \[\therefore \] Percentage decrease \[=\left( -\,40-40+\frac{40\times 40}{100} \right)%\]             \[=(-\,80+16)%=64%\] Negative sign shows decrease.
