  • question_answer
A jar contained a mixture of two liquids A and B in the ratio 4: 1. When 10 L of the mixture was taken out and 10 L of liquid B was poured into the jar, this ratio becomes 2: 3. The quantity of liquid A contained in the jar initially was

    A) 4 L

    B) 8 L

    C) 16 L

    D) 40 L

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Let the initial quantity of liquids A and B in the jar be 4x and x L respectively. After taking out 10 L of the mixture, Liquid \[A=4x-\frac{4}{5}\times 10=(4x-8)L\] Liquid \[B=4x\times \frac{1}{5}\times 10=(4x-2)L\] After pouring 10 L of Liquid B,             \[\frac{4x-8}{4x-2+10}=\frac{2}{3}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[12x-24=8x+16\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[4x=40\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=\frac{40}{4}=10\] \[\therefore \] Quantity of Liquid \[A=4x=4\times 10=40L\]
