In a mixture of 80 L, the ratio of milk and water is 3 : 1. If the ratio of milk and water is to be 2 : 3, the how much amount of water is to be further added?

    A) 70 L

    B) 80 L

    C) 100 L

    D) 140 L

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Let in a mixture of 80L, Milk \[=3xL\] and water \[=xL\] By given condition, \[80=3x+x=4x\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=20\,L\] \[\therefore \]      Water \[=20\,L\] and       Milk \[=60\,L\] If x L of water is added, then ratio to milk and milk \[=2:3\] \[\therefore \] Water in new mixture \[=\text{(}20+x\text{) }L\] Now,     \[\frac{60}{20+x}=\frac{2}{3}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[180=40+2x\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[2x\text{ }=140\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=70\,L\]
