    Solution :

    Let the numbers are x and y. According to question,             \[x+y=42\]                                ?(i) and       \[xy=437\]                                 ?(ii) We know that             \[{{(x-y)}^{2}}={{(x+y)}^{2}}-4xy\]             \[={{(42)}^{2}}-437\times 4\]             \[=1764-1748=16\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x-y=4\]
