The ratio of the number of boys and girls in a school is 3 : 2. 20% of the boys and 25% of the girls are scholarship holders. The percentage of the school students who are not scholarship holders, is

    A) 78%

    B) 77%

    C) 55%

    D) 79%

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Let the number of boys \[=3x\] And number of girls \[=2x\] \[\therefore \] Total number of students \[=5x\] Number of boys who are not scholarship holders             \[=80%\text{ of }3x\]             \[=\frac{80\times 3x}{100}=\frac{12x}{5}\] And number of girls who are not scholarship holder \[=75%\] of 2x             \[=\frac{75\times 2x}{100}=\frac{3x}{2}\] \[\therefore \] Total number of students who are not scholarship holder             \[=\frac{12x}{5}+\frac{3x}{2}=\frac{24x+15x}{10}=\frac{39x}{10}\] \[\therefore \] Required percentage             \[=\frac{39x/10}{5x}\times 100%\]             \[=78%\]
