    What number must be added to each of 4, 10, 12, 24, so that the resulting numbers are in proportion? '

    A) 6

    B) 8

    C) 10

    D) 4

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Suppose, x number added to each term, they become same proportional. i.e., \[(4+x),\] \[\text{(}10+x\text{)},\] \[\text{(}12+x\text{)},\] \[(24+x)\]  are in proportional. \[\therefore \]      \[(4+x):(10+x)::(12+x):(24+x)\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{4+x}{10+x}=\frac{12+x}{24+x}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[(4+x)(24+x)=(10+x)(12+x)\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[96+28x+{{x}^{2}}=120+22x+{{x}^{2}}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[6x=24\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=4\]
