Two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 5. If 9 is subtracted from each number, then they are in the ratio of 12 : 23. What is the second number?

    A) 44

    B) 55

    C) 66

    D) 77

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    Let two number be x and y, Then     \[\frac{x}{y}=\frac{3}{5}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[5x-3y=0\] and       \[\frac{x-9}{y-9}=\frac{12}{23}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[23x-207=12y-108\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[23x-12y=99\] Multiply Eq. (i) by 4 and subtracting Eq. (ii) from Eq. (i), we et \[3x=99~\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[x=3\] \[\therefore \] From Eq. (i) \[5(33)-3y=0\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[y=5\times 11=55\] \[\therefore \] The second number (y) \[=55\]
