    A) 100

    B) 120

    C) 150

    D) 140

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Total marks obtained by 120 candidates \[=120\times 85\]             \[=4200\] Let the number of successful candidates \[=x\] \[\therefore \] The number of unsuccessful candidates \[=(120-x)\] \[\therefore \] According to question,             \[4200=x\times 39+(120-x)15\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[4200=29x+1800-15x\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[24x=4200-1800\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[24x=2400\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=100\] \[\therefore \] The number of successful candidates = 100
