The cost of carpeting a room is Rs. 120. If the width had been 4 m less, the cost of the carpet would have been Rs. 20 less. The width of the room is

    A)  24 m

    B)  20 m

    C)  23 m

    D)  18.5 m

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Let the cost of carpeting per sq m be Rs. 1. \[\therefore \] Area of the room \[=120\,sq\,m\] Let the breadth of the room be x m. Length of room \[=\frac{120}{x}\,\,m\] New cost \[=120-20=Rs.100\] Breadth \[=\text{(}x-4\text{)}\,m\] Then, \[\frac{120}{x}\times \text{(}x-4\text{)=100}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{6}{x}(x-4)=5\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[6x-24=5x\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=24\]            \[\therefore \] Breadth of the room \[=24\,m\]
