     Major General J.B. Hearseywas the Commanding Officer of the Bengal Presidency Division at Barrackpore when Mangal Pandey rebelled against his commanders on 29 March 1857. When his adjutant Lt. Baugh came out to investigate the unrest, Pandey opened fire. It was the first violent manifestation of the deep dissatisfaction among the Indian sepoys.
