Which of the following phenomenon shows the transverse nature of light?

    A) Photoelectric effect

    B) Interference

    C) Polarization

    D) Diffraction

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Key Idea: In transverse waves the particle displacement is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. Only transverse waves can be polarized (The word comes from " polos " meaning can have an orientation). The plane of polarisation of a transverse wave is the plane in which the disturbance takes place. This is at right angles to the direction of the wave. Light and all electromagnetic radiations can be polarized, the direction of polarization being the plane of electric field vector.
