Integral proteins of cell membrane occur on/in :

    A) inner surfaces

    B) outer surfaces

    C) phospholipid matrix

    D) inner and outer surfaces

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Cell membrane is the outermost covering of all animal cells, in plants it occurs below the cell wall. According to fluid mosaic model of Singer and Nicolson, plasma membrane (cell membrane) is a two layered phospholipid membrane which contains intrinsic and extrinsic proteins. Integral proteins (intrinsic) penetrate deeply into the lipid layer of cell membrane. Some of these proteins penetrate through phospholipid layers and project on both the surface, these are called tunnel proteins. Extrinsic or peripheral proteins occur on the surface of phospholipid layers.
