AFMC AFMC Solved Paper-2002

  • question_answer
Last electron acceptor in respiration is :

    A) \[C{{O}_{2}}\]

    B) \[{{O}_{2}}\]

    C) \[{{H}_{2}}\]

    D) \[NADH\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Electron transport chain or respiratory chain is present in inner membrane of mitochondria. lt is formed of different enzymes and coenzymes ; which act as hydrogen carrier and electron carriers. These electron carriers are arranged according to their increasing positive potential. Cyto-a3 finally donates the electrons to free molecular oxygen. In this way 02 acts as the last electron acceptor at the end of respiratory chain. Oxygen also receives two protons directly from the aquous medium to form one molecule of \[{{H}_{2}}O\]. \[\frac{1}{2}{{O}_{2}}+2{{e}^{-}}+2{{H}^{-}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}{{H}_{2}}O\]
