The compound responds to Tollen's reagent is:

    A) \[C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}\]

    B) \[C{{H}_{3}}CHO\]

    C) \[C{{H}_{3}}CON{{H}_{2}}\]

    D) \[C{{H}_{3}}COOH\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Tollen's reagent is ammoniacal silver nitrate solution. It is prepared as follows \[AgN{{O}_{3}}+\underset{(excess)}{\mathop{N{{H}_{4}}OH}}\,\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{Tollen's\,\,reagent}{\mathop{[Ag{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}]OH}}\,\,+{{H}_{2}}O\]Tollen's reagent is a mild oxidising agent and oxidise only aldehydes to form silver mirror. It is used to differentiate between aldehydes  and ketones \[RCHO+2[Ag{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}]OH\,\xrightarrow{{}}\] \[RCOON{{H}_{4}}+\underset{Silver\,mirror}{\mathop{2Ag\downarrow +3N{{H}_{3}}+}}\,{{H}_{2}}O\]
