Monds process is used for :

    A) Ni

    B) Al

    C) Fe

    D) Cu

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Mond's process is used for the purification of nickel by converting it to volatile nickel carbonyl \[\underset{\operatorname{Im}pure}{\mathop{Ni}}\,+4CO\xrightarrow{80\,{{\,}^{o}}C}Ni{{(CO)}_{4}}\] \[\xrightarrow{1810{{\,}^{o}}C}\underset{\operatorname{Im}pure}{\mathop{Ni}}\,+4CO\] Aluminium is concentrated by Baeyer's process (chemical method) and reduced by electrolytic reduction (Hall's process) in which pure Al is obtained at cathode. Fe is concentrated by hydraulic washing followed by calcination to remove moisture. It is then reduced by CO (smelting) in a blast furnace. \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}+2CO\xrightarrow{{}}FeO+C{{O}_{2}}\] \[FeO+CO\xrightarrow{{}}F{{e}^{2+}}+C{{O}_{2}}\] Cu is obtained by oxidation of sulphide ore followed by self reduction. \[C{{u}_{2}}S+2{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}2CuO+S{{O}_{2}}\] \[C{{u}_{2}}S+2C{{u}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{{}}6Cu+S{{O}_{2}}\uparrow \] Cu is further purified by electrolysis of \[\text{CuS}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}\]solution with impure Cu as anode.
