If the temperature of atmosphere is increased, the following character of sound waves is effected:

    A) amplitude

    B) frequency

    C) speed

    D) wavelength

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Key Idea: Sound waves are longitudinal waves. Longitudinal waves can travel in all three types of media solid, liquid and gas. Sound waves are longitudinal waves and its speed depends upon the properties of the medium not upon the amplitude or shape of the wave. Also the speed of sound is \[v=\sqrt{\frac{\gamma RT}{B}}\]where, \[\gamma \]is ratio of specific heats,  R is gas constant, T is temperature and M is mass. Hence, speed of sound in a gas is directly proportional to the square root of its absolute temperature.
