Directions for Question: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following four responses:

Assertion: Xenon forms fluorides. Reason: Because 5d-orbitals are available for valence shell expansion.

    A)  If both A and R are true, and R is a correct explanation of the A.

    B)  If both A and R are true, but R is not a correct explanation of the A.

    C)  If A is true, but R is false.

    D)  If both A and R are false.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Xenon belongs to noble gases which are considered to be very unreactive. In xenon atom, the ionisation potential of Xe to lose one electron was found to be nearly equivalent that of \[{{O}_{2}}\to {{O}_{2}}^{+}+{{e}^{-}}\]-. Also, due to the presence of empty 5d-orbitals, electrons can be excited and higher valency of xenon can be produced, e.g. \[Xe{{F}_{2}},Xe{{F}_{4}},Xe{{F}_{6}}\]etc.________
