Which of the following quantity is increased in a step-down transformer?

    A) voltage

    B)        current

    C)        power

    D)        frequency.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

In a step-down transformer, the voltage in the secondary is less than the voltage in the primary circuit. That is \[{{\varepsilon }_{2}}<{{\varepsilon }_{1}}\]. Since we know for an ideal transformer \[{{\varepsilon }_{2}}{{i}_{2}}={{\varepsilon }_{1}}{{i}_{1}}\] \[\Rightarrow \]  \[{{i}_{2}}=\frac{{{\varepsilon }_{1}}}{{{\varepsilon }_{2}}}{{i}_{1}}\] \[\Rightarrow \]  \[{{i}_{2}}>{{i}_{1}}\] \[\therefore \] The current in the secondary increases.
