Directions for Question: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following four responses:

Assertion: Two adjacent conductors, carrying the same positive charge have a potential difference between them. Reason: The potential to which a conductor is raised depends upon the charge. These questions consist of two statements each, printed as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following four responses.

    A) If both A and R are true, and R is a correct explanation of the A.

    B) If both A and R are true, but R is not a correct explanation of the A.

    C) If A is true, but R is false.

    D) If both A and R are false.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Let us consider two spherical shells of radii \[{{r}_{1}}\] and \[{{r}_{2}}\] which are possessing the same positive charge Q. Therefore the potential on the surface of each conductor will be \[{{V}_{1}}=\frac{KQ}{{{r}_{1}}}\] \[{{V}_{2}}=\frac{KQ}{{{r}_{2}}}\] Since \[{{r}_{1}}\ne {{r}_{2}},{{V}_{1}}\ne {{V}_{2}}\] and consequently there will be a potential difference between the two conductors.
