Directions for: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following five responses A. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true and the Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion. B. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true but the Reason is not a correct explanation of Assertion. C. If the Assertion is true but the Reason is false. D. If both the Assertion and the Reason are false. E. If Assertion is false but Reason is true.

Assertion: Lime water becomes turbid on passing \[C{{O}_{2}}\] but becomes clear on passing more \[C{{O}_{2}}\]. Reason: Lime water is calcium hydroxide, \[Ca{{(OH)}_{2}}\].

    A)  A

    B)  B

    C)  C

    D)  D

    E)  E

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Lime water is chemically \[Ca{{(OH)}_{2}}\] on passing \[C{{O}_{2}}\] through it. It turns milky due to the formation of insoluble \[CaC{{O}_{3}}\], but if excess of \[C{{O}_{2}}\] is passed it again turns colourless due to formation of soluble \[Ca{{(HC{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}\] \[Ca{{(OH)}_{2}}+C{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{white\,ppt.}{\mathop{CaC{{O}_{3}}}}\,\downarrow \] \[CaC{{O}_{3}}+C{{O}_{2}}+{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{(so\operatorname{lub}le)}{\mathop{Ca{{(HC{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}}}\,\]
