Directions for Question: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following four responses:

Assertion: Energy is released in nuclear fission. Reason: Total binding energy of the fission fragments is larger than the total binding energy of the parent nucleus.

    A) A

    B)                                        B

    C)        C

    D)        D

    E) E

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

In a nuclear fission when a bigger nucleus is fissioned into two light weight nuclei, then due to mass defect some energy is released. According to concept of binding energy, fission can occur because the total mass energy will decrease, that is \[\Rightarrow \] (binding energy) will increase. We see that for high mass nucleide (A = 240), the binding energy per nucleon is about 7.6 MeV/nucleon. For ±e middle nucleides (A = 120), it is about 8.5 MeV/nucleon. Thus, binding energy of fission fragments is larger than the total binding energy of the parent nucleus.
