Directions for: The questions consist of two statements each, printed as assertion and reason. While answering these questions you are required to choose any one of the following five responses A. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true and the Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion. B. If both the Assertion and the Reason are true but the Reason is not a correct explanation of Assertion. C. If the Assertion is true but the Reason is false. D. If both the Assertion and the Reason are false. E. If Assertion is false but Reason is true.

Assertion: A balloon filled with hydrogen will fall with acceleration \[2\pi h\]of the moon. Reason: Moon has no atmosphere.

    A) A

    B) B

    C)        C

    D)        D

    E) E

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Earth is surrounded by an atmosphere of gases, while there is no such atmosphere around the moon. Reason is that escape velocity at moon is only \[2.38\text{ }km\text{ }{{s}^{-1}}\]. At the temperature of moon the average velocity of the gas molecules is greater than this, therefore gas molecules cannot stay at moon. Hence, there is no atmosphere around the moon. Also gravity on moon is one sixth of gravity on earth. Hence, there will be no resistance faced by a body falling on moon, the balloon will fall with acceleration \[\frac{g}{6}.\]
